Wishita County, Oklahoma — A black police chief was shot four times by a white ‘survivalist,’ and the shooting did not result in an arrest. Louis Ross, the Sentinel Oklahoma police chief, was hit three times in the chest and once in the arm.

The shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Dallas Horton. After the incident, he was detained by police but later released without being charged with any crime.

Chief Ross arrived at Horton’s house Thursday morning after Wishita County 911 received two calls saying that there was a bomb inside a nearby head start school. The 911 caller identified himself as Horton. Ross went inside the school and found no evidence of a bomb. He then decided to go into Horton’s home, but not before getting backup.

Breaking down the front door, Ross entered Horton’s house. According to reports, he cleared one room and entered a second bedroom when Horton opened fire. In a press release, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations said, “Facts surrounding the case lead agents to believe the man was unaware it was officers who made entry.”

However, according to statements made by Chief Ross to a local news outlet, that may not be the case.

“Don’t know what he heard or didn’t hear screaming from five officers of the law announcing our presence, requesting to see hands,” Ross said to News9.

A relative of Horton countered that, saying, “He thought he was protecting his home and his wife. He didn’t know what was going on until the door was busted down. And you have a right to protect your family, and that’s what he was doing.”

Fortunately, Ross was wearing his bulletproof vest. He sustained “massive bruises and welts on his body,” but the shot to the arm “went clean through.”

OSBI says that no explosives were found in Horton’s home and determined that the 911 call did not come from his house. They say that he is “fully cooperating with the on-going investigation.”

Sentinel Mayor Sam Dlugonski describes Horton as a “gun-enthusiast” and “survivalist” and that he seemed “on edge.” One neighbor says he’s “not very friendly at all.” A sign reading ‘Certified Zombie killer’ hung from Horton’s door.

According to Rawstory:

A Facebook profile believed to be Horton’s is rife with racially charged images and jabs at black leaders like Rev. Al Sharpton. “Hurt ME and your [sic] gonna feel pain,”declares one image, “hurt my BEST FRIEND and your gonna need an ambulance, hurt my FAMILY…I’m gonna need a shovel.”

Another image shows a blood-spattered 18-wheeler cab with human limbs sticking out of it. “JUST DROVE THROUGH FERGUSON,” it reads, “DIDN’T SEE ANY PROBLEMS.”

Police reportedly removed seven firearms from Horton’s home.
