Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

In a stunning musical performance on Saturday Night Live, D’Angelo made his message heard: “Black Lives Matter.”

D’Angelo’s second performance during the SNL episode was the Black Messiah track, “The Charade.” The piece was performed while D’Angelo wore a hoodie in support of Trayvon Martin, the Vanguard wore t-shirts saying “I can’t breathe,” and the studio floor bore a chalk outline of a body in a nod to Michael Brown.

The first performance of the night was the lighter “Really Love,” in which D’Angelo donned a poncho and Old Western hat over his suit.

D’Angelo has said that he rushed to complete Black Messiah when the public outcry and “Black Lives Matter” movement began to gain ground. He rush-released the music so he could get out the message — and with his latest performance, the whole country has heard his voice.
