A young Indianapolis girl was shot while selling Girl Scout cookies Tuesday evening.

The 9-year-old and her sister were walking door-to-door on their block when a stray bullet stuck her leg. She is now recovering at home from her injuries.

“I heard three gunshots and then one of them hit me in the leg,” Sinai told a local CBS affiliate, recalling the incident that sent her to the hospital.

“She came in screaming ‘mommy mommy. It hurt. It hurt.’ And I’m like ‘what hurt? What’s wrong?’ Sinai’s mother Shanita Miller said. “So when I pulled her pant leg up, that’s when I discovered she was shot.”

Police are still looking for whoever was responsible for the shooting. An investigation shows that shots were fired in the direction of some men near the Retreat Cooperative apartments and that Sinai was likely hit accidentally. The family is hoping the police can find the shooter and bring him or her to justice.

“So that won’t happen to someone else’s child so they won’t experience the hurt and pain that not only me but my child, experienced,” said Shanita.

Sinai can’t walk on her own yet, but she is looking forward to her recovery so she can go back to selling cookies. In the meantime, you can help her sell cookies or even just send her a letter here.
