Two Memphis teenagers shot and killed a dog last year, and while they are already facing 75 years for other crimes — including firing at a security guard and aggravated robbery — animal rights activists are pushing for harsher sentencing for animal cruelty.

“Sick doesn’t even begin to describe it. The dog was actually greeting them. He was standing up wagging his tail,” said Cindy Marx-Sanders of Community Action for Animals.

The two teens, Matthew Tyler and Deshuan Hampton, have admitted to taking turns shooting at a dog that was barking on the other side of a fence. “When you have people that have committed acts such as this, and derived pleasure from them, they pose an extra threat to our community,” Sanders noted.

Without discounting the dangers of the teens’ other crimes, Sanders and other advocates believe harsher sentencing should be used in animal cruelty cases. “Put them away for the human, but make sure they have a nice long tack on for the animal too,” Sanders said.
