Little Silas Phillips may have been born three months early, but he didn’t quite want to leave his mom behind entirely.

In what doctors have described as a “medical miracle,” Silas was born with his amniotic sac still intact, something that doctors told his mom was “ultra rare,” according to the Daily Mail.

“Even though it sounds cliched, we caught our breath,” said Doctor William Binder, who delivered Silas at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California. “It really felt like a moment of awe… and one that will stick in my memory for some time.”

The amniotic sac is a bag containing clear liquid that helps protect an unborn baby, while providing it oxygen to breathe and nutrients to swallow. Usually, the bag breaks on its own during delivery (hence the term “water breaking”), or it can break during a C-section when the surgeon cuts through.

Silas’s mother said at first she didn’t realize what all the fuss was about until the doctor showed her the picture he had taken.

“It was definitely like a clear film where you could definitely make out his head and his hair,” she told CBS News.

“He was kind of in a foetal position and you could see like his arms and his legs curled up.

“It was actually really cool to see. And when I heard that was actually really rare I was like “oh my gosh you’re a special little baby.”

Silas, despite being three months premature, is doing well enough that doctors expect to send him and his mother home within the month.
