Thirty-year-old Chyemil Pierce was killed Monday while trying to shield her two young children from a shooting in West Oakland.

“My heart is burning for the loss of the life of a young mother and for her children, who will grow up without their mother,” said Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney.

According to McElhaney, the shooting began when a group of young women were fighting and a young man joined in and opened fire. Pierce was on her way home from picking up her children, ages 7 and 9, from school. She was hit by a stray bullet.
