Kerry Washington has signed on to star in HBO’s TV movie Confirmation as Anita Hill.

According to the Holywood Reporter, the film is currently in development and will explore the Clarence Thomas-Hill Supreme Court nomination hearings.

The film will document a time when the country was shocked into a new dialogue about sexual harassment, victims’ rights, and race relations.

Academy Award-nominated Susannah Grant will write and executive produce the drama, along with Washington, Michael London and Janice Williams. Groundswell Productions, in association with ABC Signature Studios, will produce. Although there are rumors Rick Famuyiwa is in talks to direct, there is not yet a deal in place.

The new HBO project will likely take up Washington’s time during her hiatus for filming Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal. Washington was also ready to spend her summer filming for Amma Asante’s Warner Bros. film Unforgettable.

Confirmation is another feather in HBO’s cap as it builds its list of original films. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti wil be playing tennis legends Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in another movie. The tennis movie will detail the epic Battle of the Sexes match-up. Also on the roster is an adaptation of Bryan Cranston’s All the Way. Jay Roach is set to direct that piece.
