A 35-year-old mother has been charged with murder after she allegedly took her 20-month-old son into a bathroom at a New York City restaurant and killed him.

The mother, identified as Latisha Fisher, was seen by another woman who walked into the bathroom at 5 Boro Burger in Midtown and saw Fisher with her hand over the child’s mouth, reports the NY Daily News.

“I put my hand over his mouth to put him to sleep,” Fisher said to the woman, according to police.

Fisher then allegedly locked herself in the bathroom, and employees became concerned. Workers finally forced their way inside to find the child unconscious and foaming at the mouth. Restaurant staff reportedly tried to perform CPR, but Fisher shooed them away.

Afterward, Fisher “blamed the devil,” according to police.

Police who arrived at the scene were shocked and sickened.

“I would describe her as soulless,” a law enforcement official said. “She put her hand over his mouth and smothered him.”

Fisher’s neighbors described her as having a bit of a violent streak, with one neighbor recounting a time she stabbed another family member. Other neighbors claimed an older child was removed from Fisher’s custody already.

Neighbor Carolyn Lawson, 47, said, “She needs help. It doesn’t make sense. I think she was on medication for whatever problem she had, but I’m assuming she wasn’t taking her meds.”

The Administration for Children’s Services for the city would not say if they had been involved or comment on the possible other child who was removed.
