An Atlanta-area teacher died in a car accident when two students from her school driving to prom collided with her vehicle.

Leah O’Brien, 33, was killed and her 8-year-old daughter critically injured.

According to 11Alive, the Lakeside High School teacher was “considered one of the most beloved and respected teachers,” according to the school’s principal. She taught family and consumer science and was a dance team sponsor, involved in the lives of her students.

Lakeside High School Principal Jason Clyne also told 11Alive that O’Brien was involved in creating a program called the teacher development program, which she helped put together in order to help students who wanted to pursue teaching careers.

“She built that program up from a small, two or three kids interested in it, to a thriving program because of her energy and enthusiasm and her passion for education,” Clyne said. Clyne also noted that when the high school opens its doors on Monday, grief counselors will be available for anyone who needs them.

The two teens involved in the Decatur crash, a 19-year-old male and 18-year-old female, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while O’Brien’s daughter was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. The two teens were on their way to Lakeside High’s prom.

The crash is still being investigated.
