Comedian D.L. Hughley appeared on Oprah: Where Are They Now? and broke down in tears when he spoke about raising his 26-year-old son, Kyle, who has Asperger’s.
“I think sometimes I don’t know for sure, but he’s gonna be fine,” he said.
Kyle was diagnosed at a young age, and Hughley explained that they had to stick to a very specific schedule, even as Kyle grew up and went to college.
“Everything has to be the same,” he said. “He goes to work at the same time. He eats the same thing.”
But Hughley said that, as Kyle gets older, there are moments when his son branches out and tries something new. Even these small victories give him hope.
For example, Hughley recalled a time when his car was low on gas, and Kyle offered to fill it up. “I’m a nervous wreck,” he said as he described what it felt like waiting for his son to come back home from the errand.
“So he comes back in and he gives me the receipt and the keys. And I could not stop crying, because he did something he was afraid to do.”
“I just didn’t believe he could do it,” he continued “And I held him and I said, ‘You’re gonna be all right.'”
