Nina Simone comes to life in a new upcoming documentary produced by Netflix.
What Happened, Miss Simone? features hours of rare audio recording of the legendary songstress, weaved with concert footage and select present-day interviews.
Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly revealed the first look at the documentary, which debuts on Netflix June 26.

“I think the only way to tell you who I am these days, is to sing a song,” Simone said in the film’s trailer. “We’ll start from the beginning.”
What Happened, Miss Simone? is directed by Academy Award-nominee Liz Garbus, who says, “Nina Simone’s brilliance would forever change the musical landscape and yet she never fully got her due. She struggled against demons from both within and without, and her life was both a reflection of the legacy of racism in America as well as an extraordinary example of the power a righteous voice can bring to bear against even the most wicked historical legacies.”
