ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of the pilot who died in a plane crash in a rugged area of southeast Alaska.
The Alaska Dispatch News reports that rescuers on Saturday used a helicopter to reach the remote, mountainous crash site west of Juneau to search for the remains of 45-year-old Fariah Peterson. The Alaska State Troopers say Peterson is from Birmingham, Alabama.
The Cessna 207 operated by Wings of Alaska crashed Friday after leaving Juneau for the community of Hoonah. The plane’s four passengers survived.
Alaska State Troopers say a federal investigator, members of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Juneau Mountain Rescue Crew found Peterson’s body at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The State Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to do an autopsy.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
