A 40-year-old father is being held on charges of child abandonment after his two-year-old daughter died when he allegedly left her alone in a hot car.

Hamuda Raufu had just returned from a Ramadan celebration with his wife and five children and told all of the children to go inside, but police say he never checked to make sure everyone was out of the car.

According to police, Raufu’s two-year-old daughter, Sekinat Raufu, was left inside the car for more than an hour.

That day, it was 98 degrees outside, so the temperatures inside the car were well over 100 degrees.

In Raufu’s arrest warrant, police said, “The suspect was fully aware that the complainant was unable to unstrap the safety harness to get our of her car seat and did not check the vehicle to ensure that neither the complainant or any other children were still inside.”

Raufu originally said that he had gone to get money from an ATM in the other car but then amended his story to say that he had gone to the other car for his wallet but took the first car to the ATM, with Sekinat still strapped inside. He then went inside, took a nap with his wife, and woke up when his daughter told him a car part had arrived. He went to work on the car, and that was when he noticed his lifeless daughter inside.
