Lee Daniels launching new series for Fox based on girl band
theGRIO REPORT - Fox announces that Lee Daniels' is developing a new show that will focus on an Atlanta-based girl group...
Riding on the success of Empire, Lee Daniels will be producing another show for Fox that uses the music industry as it’s setting. This time, the show, Star, will center on the members of a girl band.
Fox heads Dana Walden and Gary Newman said that the show would examine the cutthroat nature of the music industry and what it takes to rise to the top. Walden said that Daniels “talks a lot about everything from Dreamgirls to modern-day girl groups that are manufactured, they are put together, they don’t have an organic reason to be together,” and added, “That setup lends to a great soap operatic storytelling machine.”
When asked about the possibility that the shows Empire and Star could ever have a crossover event, Walden said, “It is modern-day music music in Atlanta and ‘Empire’ is modern-day music business in New York. It’s not inconceivable that the two shows can cross.”
The project, which will star three women in its musical group, is still in early production but has a put pilot commitment, which is no surprise, given the success of Empire.
In the meantime, Empire will be coming back to the small screen for its second season on September 23.
