A young Mississippi couple has been arrested after it was discovered that they were planning to fly to Turkey to get married and then cross the border into Syria in order to join ISIS.

Jaelyn Young, 19, and Muhammad Dakhlalla, 22, were arrested last Saturday morning at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport in Columbus, just before they would have gotten on the plane to Istanbul.

But their families knew nothing about their plans to join ISIS and, in fact, did not even know that the two planned to get married.

“They’re completely stunned,” said Dennis Harmon, the attorney who is representing Dakhlalla’s family.

Officials said that the couple had been talking to ISIS agents about joining up as medics to help the ISIS fighters, though Dakhlalla allegedly said last month, “I am willing to fight.”

Dakhlalla was raised in a Muslim family, while Young recently converted as has identified herself as a Sunni Muslim on her Facebook page.

The families are shocked especially by this couple’s move because they were expecting these kids to go to school. Dakhlalla recently graduated college with a psychology degree, and his parents had expected him to go on to graduate school at Mississippi State this fall. Young was studying at Mississippi State as well and was a dean’s list student while studying chemistry.

If these two are convicted for attempting and conspiring to support a terrorist group, they could face 20 years in prison.
