LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA cornerback Ishmael Adams has been arrested on suspicion of taking a phone from an Uber driver.

UCLA’s media relations office confirmed Adams’ arrest Monday.

Adams was arrested early Sunday morning when he allegedly used force to take the phone, according to Tod Tamberg, the assistant director of UCLA’s media relations and public outreach office.

Adams started all 26 games for the Bruins over the previous two seasons, becoming a key defensive contributor.

The redshirt junior also returns kicks for the 13th-ranked Bruins, who open the regular season Saturday against Virginia at the Rose Bowl.

A spokesman for the football team says the school is still gathering information.

Adams’ teammates were surprised to learn about his arrest Monday as they began game-week preparations for coach Jim Mora’s fourth season.
