INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say a shoplifting suspect who died while in custody was an 18-year-old man.

Police say Terrell Day of Indianapolis complained of breathing problems before dying in the back of an ambulance Saturday afternoon following his arrest by officers.

Day told officers he was having trouble breathing, and an ambulance was summoned. The responding medical crew assessed Day and determined he could be transported to jail, but while in the back of a jail wagon, the man again complained of breathing problems. That’s when a second ambulance was called.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine Day’s cause of death.

Police say homicide detectives and the crime lab are investigating the death.

Day was arrested after officers were called to a clothing store on the city’s far east side.
