SAN CARLOS, Ariz. (AP) — The chairman of the San Carlos Apache tribe has apologized for dressing up as Bob Marley for Halloween and painting his face dark, calling it a “poor choice.”
Terry Rambler wrote in a Facebook post Thursday that he realizes the costume was a bad decision. He says Marley is one of his favorite musicians. Reggae music is popular among American Indians because of its political message of decrying oppression.
Arizona civil rights activist Jarrett Maupin says Rambler made a mockery of black people with the costume. Maupin says it’s hypocritical for Rambler to portray a black man while being a leading opponent of the Washington Redskins mascot.
