Earlier this week, Iman Shumpert called 9-1-1 as his fiancée, Teyana Taylor, went into early labor a month before she was due.
In the recently released audio of the call, Taylor can be heard screaming as Shumpert tries to get help. “Oh she’s having the baby, the head’s coming out!” he shouts.
The dispatcher then asks Shumpert to take the phone off of its speakerphone setting so that he can better hear Shumpert. He also asks for Shumpert’s address.
“I have my daughter in my hand,” Shumpert says.
The dispatcher then asks Shumpert several questions about the state of Taylor and the baby, Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. , as Shumpert becomes emotional and can be heard crying.
“The umbilical cord, what do I do what do I do?” Shumpert asks.
The dispatcher then tells Shumpert to tie off the cord at a distance of six inches from the baby “with a piece of string, a shoe lace, anything.”
“I’m getting some headphones now, I’m reaching some headphones now,” Shumpert replies.
Shumpert is successful in tying off the umbilical cord, wrapping the new baby up in towels, and covering Taylor up with blankets so that she stays warm.
Throughout the call, the dispatcher congratulated Shumpert on a delivery well-done and on becoming a father.
