"The Star Side of Bird Hill" - By Naomi Jackson Jackson’s beautifully crafted debut novel follows the lives of two adolescent sisters raised in Brooklyn as they navigate their fractured family circumstances in their new, but ancestral home of Barbados. Under their grandmother’s stern and magical care, the girls explore their blossoming love lives, their dreams and how they fit into their community of chosen and blood family. Jackson’s writing is strong, unflinching and provides a vivid meditation on love, identity and black womanhood. (Photo of Naomi Jackson/Lola Flash)
