It’s hard to trust Hollywood when it comes to black film.

At the end of 2013, films by black directors were released almost every single month. We had Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen, Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, Malcolm Lee’s The Best Man Holiday and Kasi Lemmon’s Black Nativity.

Some wondered: Was this all a fluke? Or had black filmmakers arrived in fuller force?

As 2015 closes out, there is a strong case for the latter.
