Serena Williams didn't quite understand 'Netflix and chill' at first

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

In the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, Serena Williams opens up about advice on dating and other topics. But during the interview, she also revealed that she didn’t realize there was a hidden meaning behind the phrase “Netflix and chill.”

The revelation came in response to a fan who asked if she was “naïve” for thinking that the phrase simply referred to watching Netflix and hanging out.

“I have to tell you, I thought the same exact thing. When I say ‘Netflix and chill,’ that’s what I mean,” Williams responded. “I guess you and I are just old-fashioned—if you can call Netflix old-fashioned!”

Williams then went on to give some stellar dating advice, especially when it comes to being true to yourself:

First you need to identify where the self-doubt is coming from. I think that goes back to always being yourself from the beginning. Be confident of your inner strength and beauty, and that will be reflected on the outside. My mom always taught my sisters and me to be ourselves and to stay true to who we are.

She also dished on the secret to feeling sexy: “Being sexy is really about how you carry yourself. Strength and confidence equal sexy.”
