Nate Parker’s slavery drama The Birth of a Nation absolutely blew everyone away at the Sundance this week, igniting an all-night bidding war before eventually being purchased by Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million.

The deal marks the most expensive purchase ever seen at the Sundance Film Festival, outpacing the previous record holder at the $10.5 million paid for Little Miss Sunshine.

According to both Variety and Deadline, the deal could have been made at an even higher price, with giant Netflix throwing in a bid at around $20 million.

Deadline also reported that “potential buyers for the film streamed out of the lobby mere minutes after the cast had left the stage post-screening.”

In an entertainment industry currently steeped in a huge debate over its lack of diversity, this is welcome news indeed.
