Hampton becomes first HBCU to field Div. 1 lacrosse team
HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Hampton became the first historically black university to field an NCAA Division I lacrosse team on Saturday, losing 20-3 to Roberts Wesleyan.
Coached by Lloyd Carter, the Pirates also became the first HBCU since Morgan State in 1981 to field a varsity men’s team in the sport.
Dom Cianfarino scored six goals for Roberts Wesleyan in its season opener, including five in the first period when the Redhawks took a 10-0 lead. Matt Benedict added a goal and six assists. The visitors outshot Hampton 44-13 and had a 28-8 edge in shots on goal.
Brock Robinson scored the first goal in Pirates history 58 seconds into the second period. Kendall Sapp added Hampton’s second goal, making it 15-2 at halftime and closed the scoring with 4:42 remaining in the game.
