Man tries to rob taxi at gunpoint, didn’t realize taxi had been pulled over by cop

Taxi driver Ralph Valletta was being held at gunpoint as a man tried to rob him when a cop pulled him over for taking too long at a traffic light.

It was Valletta’s first pickup of the day when 18-year-old Victor Martinez-Herrera got in the car, his hoodie pulled up over his face and a scarf across the rest of his features.

“Give me all your money man! Give me everything you got!” Martinez-Herrera said, holding what appeared to be a gun.

Because this was Valletta’s first pickup, he could only hand over $20 and a cellphone. However, he was saved from further danger when Berks County Deputy Sheriff Terry Ely, who was in the car behind Valletta’s taxi, noticed that Valletta did not move for some time after the traffic light had changed.

“The traffic signal had gone through a couple cycles and so he wanted to go up and investigate what the issue was,” Reading Police Capt. Damond Kloc said.

Ely was then able to detain the suspect at gunpoint, as the driver can be heard in video captured of the incident telling Ely, “You’re a lifesaver!”
