Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

It’s been 20 years since Loretta Devine played Gloria “Glo” Matthews in Waiting to Exhale, but she recently revealed to Hollywood Today Live that a sequel for that 90s hit is in the works.

Part of the reason it’s taking so long, she said, was the fact that some of the major players are no longer with us.

Loretta Devine receives lifetime achievement award

“They’re still writing on it, for all we know… Everything happened so quick because Gregory passed and then Whitney passed and it’s like you can’t start a movie with two funerals and they were like the key characters and so everything just sort of got scattered after that but I think Terry McMillan is still trying to make it happen,” she explained.

Should we hold out breath for ‘Waiting to Exhale’ sequel?

But it looks like the rest of the cast is on board.

“Oh God, everyone would be on board. Whitney was even like, the last time I talked to her, ‘Oh God I can’t wait. I’m going to get myself together to do this’, and it just didn’t happen,” she said.

‘Waiting to Exhale’ sequel in limbo after Whitney Houston’s death

As for who they would get to replace Whitney Houston, Devine didn’t have specific names, but she did have boundless optimism: “Oh they have so much new young, great talent so it would be limitless girls that could do it.”

Devine also spoke about the hype surround a Waiting to Exhale sequel during an August 2015 interview with Madame Noire.

“I’m not sure. The buzz on that has died way down, Devine said. “Terry moved to L.A. and said she was going to work on that. And it’s been really hard for her to find someone that could match the writing styles with. We haven’t heard any more rumors on that.”

McMillian said during a January 2015 interview that the odds of there being a Waiting to Exhale sequel to her seemed bleak.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen. I really don’t,” McMillan told said. “It’s been horrible since Whitney [Houston] passed away for a whole lot of reasons. Fox wanted to basically eliminate that character altogether from the story. How they thought that was going to work, I don’t know.”
“I think it’s kinda dead in the water,” she added.
