Former student charged in 2 rape cases gets 1 year probation
On Thursday, a former Indiana University student was sentenced to one year of probation after taking a plea deal in relation to two rape cases.
John Enochs, 22, agreed to plead guilty to battery with moderate bodily injury (class A misdemeanor), while the two charges of rape against him were dropped. He spent only one day in jail, according to court records.

In April 2015, a victim told police that she had been at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house when she was raped, but she did not know her attacker. Although she told him to stop repeatedly, he held her down, and she was able to leave the room eventually to get away.
Security video showed Enochs entering the room with the victim, according to police, and she left 24 minutes later. Health officials say the victim suffered a laceration to her genitals.
The police found a similar case from 2013 while investigating. That victim had no recollection of the events and said she was ‘unaware’ the sex was occurring due to her consumption of alcohol.

Eventually, with both DNA evidence and witness statements, Enochs was arrested but managed to strike a deal.
Despite criticism, prosecutors have defended the plea deal in a statement, saying “Neither case, standing alone, presented sufficient evidence to prove rape” and that there were “evidentiary problems.”
Enochs’ attorney insists his client is innocent altogether.
“John Enochs did not rape anyone and he should never have been charged with these offenses… John Enochs did admit to conduct in one instance that the Court found to be a misdemeanor. He is profoundly sorry for his lack of judgment and has apologized for his conduct.”
The victim in the 2015 case has also taken action against Enochs’ fraternity for fostering a dangerous environment. According to News.com/AU, from 2008 to 2014, there have been 712 allegations of sexual assault reported to Indiana University and Bloomington police departments.
