ATLANTA (AP) — A newspaper reports a police internal affairs investigation has found a former Atlanta officer shot into a vehicle not knowing whether the black motorist was the person he’d been called to investigate.

Officer James R. Burns, a white officer fired by the department after the fatal June 22 shooting, told investigators that he shot at a car which was “trying to run me over and kill me.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which obtained the 60-page internal affairs report on the death of 22-year-old Deravis Caine Rogers, reports the investigation undermines the officer’s explanation for firing his gun.

Sgt. Warren Pickard tells the newspaper that evidence, including dash cam videos, contradicts the officer’s version of what happened. Pickard said there was no obvious threat to Burns.
