Elaine Thompson is the fastest woman in the world

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

When Elaine Thompson won the gold medal in the Rio Olympics for the women’s 100-meter dash, it took her a moment to realize what had happened before she burst into celebrations.

Thompson, of Jamaica, won with a time of 10.71 seconds, with Tori Bowie of the United States taking home the silver with a time of 10.83.

“When I crossed the line and glanced across to see I was clear I didn’t quite know how to celebrate,” Thompson said after her win. “There is a big screen back home in my community in Jamaica. I can’t imagine what is happening there right now.”

Thompson beat out her fellow Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who was trying to make Olympic history as the first athlete to win three consecutive golds in the 100-meter dash, an accomplishment that Usain Bolt will also be shooting for.

But Fraser-Pryce still felt good about taking home the bronze medal, especially after an injury to her foot that she described on Saturday as still being “really bad.”

“It has definitely been a very hard journey,” Fraser-Pryce said. “It’s part of athletics. It’s part of sports. It’s part of the story you tell. I was excited to have the opportunity to defend my title.”
