Waiter tipped $500 for random act of kindness

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Kasey Simmons was absolutely floored when a customer walked into the Applebee’s where he works and left him a tip for $500.

“They ordered the cheapest thing on the menu,” Simmons said. “Flavored water.”

The bill came to $0.37, but the tip was for $500, and Simmons was floored when he read the note explaining why this customer had gone to such lengths.

The day before, Simmons had seen an older woman at the local grocery store who was clearly upset. She was still going about her grocery trip, and no one was reaching out to her until Simmons decided to step in and even paid for her groceries.

“It was only $17, but it’s not about the money,” he said. “It’s about showing someone you care.”

But as Simmons found out from a note left on a napkin at the restaurant, the older woman was struggling because it was the anniversary of her husband’s death.

“On one of the most depressing days of the year … you made my mother’s day wonderful,” the note said. “You insisted on paying. Told her she is a very beautiful woman. I have not seen this woman smile this much since dad died.”
