Michelle Obama makes surprise appearance at Howard University
First Lady Michelle Obama gave a lot of Howard University freshmen a welcome to college they’ll probably never forget.
As they gathered in the auditorium Thursday, freshmen business students learned that the First Lady would be speaking. She was joined by late-night host Seth Myers and actor Nick Cannon, who also recently enrolled as a freshman the university. The trio offered words of wisdom to the group.

“Dont rush to be ballin’,” said the First Lady. “Grow into your lifestyle.”
Mrs. Obama encouraged students to challenge themselves and talked about the impact of having a great education.
“College was probably the most impactful thing that I’ve done in my life, other than being First Lady and having kids and marrying Barack Obama,” she said as the crowd laughed along.

“Honestly, I’m not here for a degree,” said Cannon. “I’m here because I have a real thirst for knowledge. I feel like that’s why we’re all here in this room.”
Host Seth Myers got in on the conversation, encouraging students to make the most of their experience.
“Embrace this time,” said Myers. “When you get out of college no one gives you time anymore.”
The First Lady also noted that even when pursuing a dream, the class of 2020 should prepare to push past critics.

“Just brush it off and just do the work,” she said. “It’s the doing of the work that just gets you through. It’s not what other people think of you. I still carry that with me today as First Lady of the United States, because there are people who don’t think I should be doing that either. And it’s been eight years.
