Nate Parker says Colin Kaepernick’s protest is a form of resistance in the spirit of Nat Turner

TheGrio.com’s Jon Kelley caught up with director and actor Nate Parker to discuss the major themes of his upcoming film The Birth of a Nation. 

Kelly also asked Parker to share his thoughts on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s current protest of the national anthem before games. Parker pledged his support to the 28-year-old Kaepernick, who has stated he will not stand for the national anthem to protest the ongoing “oppression” of black people in America.

Parker says Kaepernick’s stance on such an important issue takes “courage” and is a form of “resistance” in the same vein Nat Turner’s uprising was in the 19th century.
