Several black freshmen at American University claim that they experienced bizarre and racially-motivated attacks as people have apparently been throwing bananas at them.

One student was hit in the head with a banana when someone tossed it into her dorm, while another, who lives on the same floor, found a rotten banana outside her door.

“I wouldn’t let people drive me out, but it’s kind of sad that this kind of thing still happens,” Neah Gray, the student who found the rotten banana, told the Washington Post.

On Friday, the university held a town hall meeting to address student’s concerns.

“We understand that members of our community feel hurt by an incident that happened in a residence hall and separate allegations of racially biased behavior,”the school said in a statement. “We’re working with student leaders and others in the community concerned about this.”

The university’s response was not enough to satisfy many students, who say they weren’t given enough notice to attend the town hall meeting.

“Black women are under threat on campus ― they are being used as target practice,” Jada Bell, the Black Student Alliance’s outreach coordinator, told BuzzFeed. “We’re literally being attacked and assaulted on campus, and there’s nothing being done about it by the administration.”
