Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is expected to announce at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon that the Chicago police are adding almost 1,000 members to their ranks.

Johnson’s “major policy address” is expected to include the announcement of 970 new officers, including 516 patrol officers, 92 field training officers, 200 detectives, 112 sergeants and 50 lieutenants.

The announcement comes as Chicago is suffering from an increasing violence problem, and the additional forces are likely a much-needed boost.
