A Weather Channel meteorologist is under fire after suggesting on-air that Haiti’s deforestation is due to hungry children.
Jennifer Delgado was covering Hurricane Matthew, which hit Haiti early Tuesday morning, when she showed an overview of the deforestation threatening Haiti that could put it at more risk than its neighbor, the Dominican Republic.
“They take all the trees down, they burn the trees,” Delgado said in speaking about the deforestation before she bizarrely claimed, “Even the kids there, they’re so hungry they actually eat the trees.”
The comment sparked significant backlash, with many calling for her resignation over her ignorant statement.
The Weather Channel’s president, David Clark, has since issued an apology, stating, “We are terribly sorry for an on air error and are taking measures to correct it.”
