On Tuesday, a 16-year-old boy committed suicide by jumping in front of a subway train in front of dozens of witnesses.

A southbound A train hit the boy at the 42nd St.-Port Authority Bus Terminal station at about 7:50 a.m. He died at the scene.

“I saw police rushing over and then they shut the whole station down,” said Abul Hoque, 74, who works at the station’s convenience store. “I heard a young person jumped. I don’t know why they’d do that. It’s very sad. It could be anyone — my daughter, son, your brother, sister — It’s very sad… No one knows why someone would do that.”

Police have not released the name of the teen but have said that he “had a history of depression” and was hospitalized in September for suicidal thoughts.
