California voters made history on Tuesday, electing Kamala Harris to become only the second African-American woman in the U.S. Senate.

Harris, 51, also made history with a couple of firsts; she’s the first black politician in history to represent the state in the Senate as well as the first Indian-American senator.

The state attorney general beat out challenger Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Orange) and was backed by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and other top Democrats.

Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, is a graduate of Howard University and attended law school at the University of California.
