College player ends season after girlfriend pours boiling water on him

FIU senior tight end Jonnu Smith’s season ended abruptly when his pregnant girlfriend poured boiling water on him.

That day, Smith and Mary Gaspar, who was five months pregnant with his child, argued over how much attention he was giving her. Gaspar clearly felt that it was not enough, and she was “feeling extremely emotional and stressed,” according to her statement to the Florida International University police, when she started to boil a pot of water.

She then poured the boiling water over Smith, and when he still didn’t react as strongly as she felt he should, she began to hit him as well.

Smith suffered burns on his head, neck, back, a shoulder and an arm, according to the arrest affidavit, and although the extent of the burns are not known, he was seen back on campus. However, he is not fit to return to football, and his season has ended.

Over the four seasons that Smith has played for FIU, he has been their top offensive player and was the Panthers’ best 2017 NFL Draft prospect. Early 2017 draft projections have him as a late draft pick or undrafted free agent. He also made the midseason John Mackey Award (Best College Tight End) watch list in 2014 and 2015 and the preseason Mackey Award watch list in 2015 and 2016.
