Michelle Obama says she is ready to leave the White House in Vogue cover story

Michelle Obama is stunning on the cover of Vogue’s December issue.

Months before she found out the results of the election, the First Lady spoke with Vogue in September, saying that “it’s time” for her to get out of the White House.

“I think our democracy has it exactly right: two terms, eight years. It’s enough,” she said. “Because it’s important to have one foot in reality when you have access to this kind of power. The nature of living in the White House is isolating.”

She added that while her daughters give her “some normalcy,” it is hard to stay connected to reality when you can’t even do your own grocery shopping.

“When you’re not engaged in the day-to-day struggles that everybody feels, you slowly start losing touch,” she explained. “And I think it’s important for the people in the White House to have a finger on the pulse.”

As for her plans after leaving the White House, the First Lady admitted that she would not be staying out of public service.

“I’ve always felt very alive using my gifts and talents to help other people. I sleep better at night. I’m happier. So we’ll look at the issues that I’ve been working on. The question is: How do I engage in those issues from a new platform?”
