Three weeks ago, a woman’s three grandchildren were found living in squalor in an abandoned house in Chicago, and she is now caring for them herself.

The three kids, aged 7, 2 and 1 were found in the apartment that had no running water, heat or electricity by Chicago police. They had not been bathed in months, and the oldest child had never been to school.

“I had to cut their hair, it hadn’t been done in months, they had sores on their head,” said their grandmother, Dlores Anderson.

Anderson said that her son had lied to her about where the children were living, so she had no idea about their situation until police found them. She immediately told authorities that she would care for the children herself. “They are my heart now, I’m going to show them they can be loved and taken care of like children are supposed to,” Anderson said.

The officers who found the children have also pitched in to help, buying baby beds and diapers and throwing the girls’ first ever birthday parties.

“These officers, they have been a blessing, when my own family won’t help, I have no friends, all I do have right now is God and them and now my grand babies,” Anderson said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise money for Anderson to take care of her granddaughters. The fundraiser has already topped over $100,000.
