Amy Roof collapsed after hearing prosecutor Jay Richardson give a detailed description of the mass shooting that occurred at the Charleston church in which Roof executed nine black church goers.
On Thursday, Roof’s lawyers used the medical incident to call for a mistrial.
“Highlighting the emotional nature of the proceedings, the media noted that following the opening statements, the defendant’s mother required emergency medical attention,” the lawyers said in the filing. “She was admitted to the hospital with a heart attack.”
As Amy Roof was helped from the courtroom, she sobbed and kept repeating apologies to both court security and family members.
The court filing has not provided an update on Amy Roof’s condition.
