As recount efforts continue in swing states like Michigan, officials say that voting machines in a crucial county where much of the African-American population is found were broken on the day of the election.

According to the Detroit News, over 80 polling machines were broken, leading to concerns that more than half of Detroit’s precincts and one-third of the surrounding precincts in Wayne County may have incorrect vote totals.

This news comes just after a federal judge stopped the recount efforts only three days into the recount, causing outrage as evidence continues to mount that the election results might have been tampered with.

The judge ruled that the filing by Green Party candidate Jill Stein for a recount did not have cause to go forward. The judge ruled that because Stein was not impacted by the results of the election, there was no cause for her to file for a recount.

Detroit’s election director, Daniel Baxter, told the Detroit News that it was unclear how the broken voting machines would affect the election results, but he believes it is possible that votes were counted multiple times on the broken machines.
