Donald Trump says that he is too smart to need daily intelligence briefings from security professionals.

“I get it when I need it,” Trump told “Fox News Sunday” in speaking about why he doesn’t get briefed daily the way President Obama does, adding, “I’m, like, a smart person. I don’t have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years – could be eight years. … I don’t need that.”

He went on to say that he was trusting the generals in his cabinet as well as the vice-president elect, Mike Pence, who does receive daily briefings. Instead, he prefers to only get weekly briefings, asking the intelligence professionals to just update him if anything changes.

Trump also spoke about the One China policy, which has the United States recognizing that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of that China, officially. That policy was threatened when Trump took a phone call from Taiwan’s leader, but Trump insisted that he understood the policy. However, he said that he was not “bound” by the policy unless China made a deal with him on trade.

“I fully understand the One-China policy,” he said, “but I don’t know why we have to be bound by a One-China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things.”
