Stacy Lattisaw’s family is upset with Johnny Gill and BET’s The New Edition story because of its portrayal of Lattisaw.

Lattisaw and Gill dated in the 1980s, and the two of them had a #1 hit on the charts with “Where Do We Go from Here”, in 1989.

However, the made-for-TV movie’s depiction of the circumstances of their breakup has her family up in arms, as Gill suggests that the breakup happened because of his dark complexion.

According to The Jasmine Brand, Jerry Lattisaw spoke out about the portrayal, saying, “My mom don’t care about what color Johnny Gill is!!! If it wasn’t for her, he wouldn’t be in New Edition period!!! She basically got him his first record deal …. by the way, Stacy husband is brownskin too!!! How they gon’ put my motha out there like that! JG u still my brother tho!”
