Budweiser Super Bowl ad highlights it was founded by an immigrant, Trump supporters threaten boycott
Donald Trump supporters have vowed to stop drinking Budweiser beer after seeing the Anheuser-Busch Super Bowl ad, which was a retelling of how its co-founder came to America.
The commercial came at an interesting time, what with the country divided over immigration following Trump’s executive order.
The Super Bowl commercial is a minute long and titled “Born The Hard Way.” It tells the story of how German immigrant Adolphus Busch came to America in 1857.
In the ad, you see Busch encountering anti-immigrant sentiment, the kind of sentiment many feel we are seeing now in the US.
After trudging through swamps and traveling by boat, Busch gets to Missouri. When he arrives, a man says, “Welcome to St Louis, son.”
Next, he heads into a pub, where a man buys him a beer. That man is Eberhard Anheuser, who together with Busch goes on to form Budweiser’s parent company, Anheuser-Busch.
According to Anheuser-Busch Vice President Ricardo Marques, “This commercial shows the start of Budweiser’s journey.”
“And while it is set in the 1800’s, it’s a story we believe will resonate with today’s entrepreneurial generation — those who continue strive for their dreams.”

Trump supporters have taken the ad as an attack on their new president’s policies, but the beer company has denied this. They say that the message is apolitical. They also noted that the commercial was being made before Trump signed his travel ban.
“This story celebrates Adolphus Busch’s American dream and the bold vision to brew the best beer in the world,” Budweiser ‘master brewer’ Peter Kraemer stated.
“While everyone knows Budweiser, they don’t necessarily know our story and how we came to be brewed the hard way.”
Budweiser paid big money have their 60-second ad play during the Super Bowl. According to the New York Times, they would have had to pay $10 million just for the air time alone, not including the cost of producing the commercial.
This is the 28th year that Budweiser has been the exclusive beer advertiser at the Super Bowl and the 42nd Super Bowl that they have been a part of.
