While many are celebrating the New England Patriots’ historic comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons at the Super Bowl LI, for many others online, the final outcome took them back to another controversial battle: the 2016 Election.
The Falcons, who came into the Super Bowl as the underdogs ready to overtake the longtime favorite Patriots, seemed poised to win one of the biggest upsets in recent sports history. But after coming back from a 25-point deficit, the Patriots came out victorious, causing many online users to express their disappointment and reflect on how the results were similar to President Donald Trump’s shocking win this past November.
For conspiracy theorists out there, it also doesn’t hurt that President Trump and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady are “good friends” who play golf together, according to Trump. The president even took to Twitter to send his congratulations.
What an amazing comeback and win by the Patriots. Tom Brady, Bob Kraft and Coach B are total winners. Wow!

Even Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., took to Twitter to draw parallels between the two events over Super Bowl statistics of which team was likely to come out victorious. When the Wall Street Journal tweeted that the Falcons had a 91.6 percent chance of winning, Trump Jr. wrote, “Where have I seen stats like this before?” along with American flag emojis — a clear reference to his father’s presidential upset.
