Soccer player awkwardly thanks wife and girlfriend live on TV

Mohammed Anas, who plays in South Africa's Premier Soccer League, was trying to thank his loved ones, but he got a little too specific on live TV.

Mohammed Anas, who plays in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League for the Free State Stars FC, was trying to thank his loved ones, but he got a little too specific on live TV.

Anas had just been named “Man of the Match” on Saturday after scoring twice on AJAX Cape Town when he spoke to reporters, saying, “And I appreciate my fans, also. My wife and my girlfriend… yeah, I mean my wife. Yeah, sorry to say… I’m sorry… I’m so sorry, my wife…”

The clip went almost instantly viral and has been viewed on Twitter alone around 2.5 million times, so there’s pretty much no way his wife hasn’t seen it, either.

Anas later tried to explain himself after the live gaffe, the athlete explained that he was referring to his daughter when he shouted out his “girlfriend.”

“My family knows that I call my daughter my girlfriend. That’s what I was talking about. I don’t have a girlfriend,” he said.
