Gov’t spending nearly $1M a month to protect Betsy DeVos

On Friday, the Marshall Service released a statement after a threat assessment conducted in February saying that it costs around $1 million per month in order to protect Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

According to the Associated Press, the decision was made after the February threat assessment to give DeVos additional protection, and from February to September, the cost is estimated to be $7.78 million. That comes out to around $1 million per month. The cost will be covered by the Education Department, and it should be noted that this is just an estimate, not the final cost of the protection.

The Washington Post, which was the first to report on the story, noted that DeVos is currently the only cabinet official who is receiving protection. Her appointment as Education Secretary was incredibly controversial, requiring Mike Pence, the Vice President, to cast a historic tie-breaking vote in order to confirm her as Republicans crossed the aisle to join Democrats in opposition to her nomination. Since that time, DeVos has faces such security problems as when protesters blocked her from entering a school in February, among other things. After that incident, the threat assessment was conducted.
