A teenager with a gun shot a police officer through the door of his house after reporting multiple break-in attempts.

According to Detroit police Chief James Craig, the 19-year-old, “fearing for the safety” of his mother and brother, fired on the two officers at the door with a shotgun, critically wounding one while the other was injured by shrapnel.

Both officers were rushed to the hospital, where the officer who was shot is in critical condition.

Craig said that the gunman as well as his mother and 14-year-old brother were all taken into custody after the shooting. He also noted that it was possible the teen did not know the police were outside the door.
