Oprah: ‘I feel about Ava the way Maya Angelou felt about me’
During an interview with "The Talk," Oprah Winfrey opened up about her career and friendship with Ava DuVernay, who she said made her feel "proud."
During an interview with CBS’s The Talk, Oprah Winfrey opened up about not only her film and television career but her friendship with Ava DuVernay, who she said made her feel “proud.”
“Ava has become a dear, dear friend of mine,” she explained. “I feel about Ava the way Maya [Angelou] felt about me. I see her rise and I’m like, ‘Ah, I’m so proud.’ I love to be a part of that.”
Winfrey stars in DuVernay’s film A Wrinkle in Time along with Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon.
She also spoke about her upcoming film, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and how nervous she felt portraying the life of the Baltimore woman whose cells were used for medical breakthroughs. “I was a little scared of this role, and for five years had other people in mind to play it… because I’m not as experienced an actor as most of the people that I work with,” she admitted.
She went on to speak about the end of her beloved daytime show, The Oprah Winfrey Show.
“I miss the platform and having the opportunity to talk to people,” she said. “I was a little lost after the show. After 25 years with an organized schedule, and then to not have a schedule it’s like, what do you do? So that’s why I’m excited about my role with 60 Minutes.”
